Mulholland Cowboy

My experience in the kitchen at Sunny Spot really made me think about people who just starting out, struggling to get a career going. The guy that I mentioned, “Lime” is his early 20’s. He has a girlfriend and going to get married soon. And he’s slaving away in a kitchen so he can go to school to study computers.

He was really nice to me in the kitchen; encouraging and helpful. I wanted to get him something for Christmas not only to show my gratitude for his help in the kitchen, but also because I’m in a position to help him. I work in the field that he eventually wants to get into, graphic design. A reader suggested I let him intern at my job for a day. That’s an awesome idea but the strict corporate culture of my company would make that next to impossible.

I decided to gift him a one-month membership to Lynda.com which is an on-line training site for any graphic design related program you can think of. I figured this would help him in his burgeoning career.

It’s always a bit scary to help someone you don’t really know like that. You never know how that person will react. Some people are too full of pride to accept a gift and could even get mad. Or they might think you’re meddling in their life. I just want to do something for somebody since I’m in a position to.

So hopefully Lime likes his early Christmas present. I expect to see him out of the kitchen and designing soon.
